In-Class Assignment, Week 11 (April 9)

“Every Girl is the End of the World to Me”
  • The book begins with describing each girls and each for eerie relationships to the main character.
  • It really plays out linearly
  • The story is very much set in real life and doesn’t really have any fantastical elects to it. It feels like we are all just living out the memories of this character
  • The story could also be just a recollection of the the author’s relationships with various girls he was with. We feel that the story id based on his real life.
  • Much of the story consists of conversations between characters.

“Why I Hate Saturn”
  • Each page has a frame around it, giving it a museum look to it.
  • There are not dialogue/word bubbles for the characters who are talking. Each person’s dialogue is at the bottom of the page, or below a character. This very different from usual comics.
  • The characters, interactions, and art style is similar to Ghost world. The characters are always talking like real people would. Both of them have this minimalist, and monochromatic style and feel to them that are surprisingly similar to one another.

“A History of Violence”
  • *Very Explicit*
  • The story sets out with two men shooting a man and a woman, then finding they don’t have a lot of moneys on them. They decided to the same to others, hoping they get more money. This really sets up these chargers, and lets reader know the kind of people they are. It also sets the tone.
  • It really doesn’t pull punches when characters talk about acts of violence and the consequences of it. In one page, a father is teller his daughter bout these popes who wen to jails and not to do those acts of cruel, explicit violence, all through the guise of a bedtime story, calling them “bad wolves”.
  • The art style, which mainly consists of rough lines in pen and ink, goes with the tone, and mood of the story and characters.

“Alice in Sunderland”
  • The art style seems very disorienting, giving it a sense of confusion, just like how the man in the tory frats out beingg when seeing the talking rabbit on stage for the first time.
  • It talks bout several different historical events nd individuals, from bands, to characters in theaters. It even showcases them in the background behind characters, using actual images of them on contrast tot he cartoonish/flat art style of the book.
  • It's a satire.
  • It’s ver mixed media. It uses different styles at different parts. From using the same art style for the characters, to exploring events in the time periods. It definitely keeps it interesting. Theres even an intermission, which you would never see in an actual book.

“The Fountain”

  • The art work so captivating, and is a main reason the book can engross readers.
